Training for Long Runs on a Treadmill

By Chet Sandeksi

Being well into the year, there are many people that have discarded their New Year's resolutions. If you have lost sight of your resolution to be healthier, it may be time to revisit and revive your goal.

Whether you are running on a treadmill because of inclement weather or you are working on a treadmill for rehabilitation, it can be difficult to make it through runs. Watching your distance slowly tick away on the digital screen or watching a tiny television screen can be difficult.

When you are used to scenery and the feeling of travelling and moving, it can be hard to be in the same place when you start your run and when you end your run. Although running on a treadmill can be a pain, sometimes it is necessary.

The elliptical trainer machine, or simply the elliptical, is the ideal cardio training machine for those persons who are otherwise unable to perform cardio workouts due to failing or hurt joints and knees as the elliptical is a low impact machine that will not further damage the knees.

Create a playlist that is motivating and that is going to help you focus on something other than the treadmill that you are running on. With the right music in your ears, you may be able to lose yourself in your thoughts and the music throughout your run.

For whatever reasons this rumor of gluteus shaping elliptical misuse has grown in popularity and subsequent practice but is nonetheless erroneous. In fact, pedaling the elliptical backwards can be harder on the knees of a person than pedaling forward and for this reason pedaling backwards should be limited if not avoided completely.

Planning out your run ahead of time may also help you get the exercise that you are going to need. When you plan your run, you should decide how fast you want to run and how long you want to be running at that speed.

After you have your treadmill delivered, be sure to set it up properly. The set up process can be difficult with a treadmill and you want to make sure that you are setting up the treadmill properly so you can be sure that you do not void any warrantee.

As you get used to running in your home, you may need to make adjustments to make your runs more comfortable. Including more fans or even putting a TV near your treadmill may help you make it through the runs that you have scheduled for your training.

While you are training for any race, you should take the proper precautions to avoid having to meet with a knee replacement doctor. Running can be hard on your knees and it is important that you are in tune with your body as you are training.

Before each run it is important that you are stretching properly and warming up your body. If you are not taking the proper steps to keep your body health, you may find that you require a visit to the knee replacement doctor.

Training for a race indoors can be difficult, but with some practice you can be sure that you are ready. So, hit the gym today to start training for your next race.
